Project Healing Waters is a fishing group focused on more than just catching fish. The nonprofit is uniting retired military members through fly fishing.
All programs offered by Project Healing Waters are free to disabled veterans. Erie's local chapter meets several times a month for various classes and outings. They offer fly fishing, fly tying, rod building, and other outdoor activities year round.
Program lead Craig Brandick tells us that he's seen first hand how these activities can help with a veteran's rehabilitation both physically and mentally. He says that their goal is to help members find a sense of camaraderie and belonging after leaving the service. Brandick emphasizes how much connecting with the outdoors can be therapeutic for people.
"Is it the sound of the water? I like to think so," said Brandick. "Is it the tug on the line? Definitely."
Erie News Now spoke with Project Healing Waters member Benjamin Dolby to learn more about how this organization has helped him transition from the military to civilian life. His full story can be found in the video above.
