Minnesota stream trout fishing season begins

PRESTON, Minn. (KTTC) – Saturday, April 13, marked the beginning of Minnesota’s stream trout fishing season, and Preston’s Driftless Fly Fishing Company said this is reeling in business.
The store’s owner, Melvin Hayner, stated Minnesota is becoming more popular for trout fishing. “Historically, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado in the west have been real meccas for fly fishing,” he said. “But now, the midwest is starting to come more popular because it’s becoming more well known.”
Hayner shared stream trout fishing season traditionally starts on the second Saturday in April each year and lasts until the middle of October. He said Minnesota has year-round trout fishing; the activity is limited to catch-and-release only until the season starts—when people can keep up to five trout.
“We draw from a lot of the different metropolitan areas: Dubuque, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Rochester, even La Crosse and Chicago. We have a lot of visitors from around the world that, you know, come and try out [fly fishing].”
